How Ballerinas Customize Their Pointe Shoes

05:32
Olivia Boisson is a corps de ballet member with New York City Ballet. Boisson has been with NYC Ballet for seven years. As a corps member, Boisson dances 10 to 12 hours a day, six days a week. She showed us how she customizes her pointe shoes for performances. ------------------------------------------------------ INSIDER is great journalism about what passionate people actually want to know. Olivia Boisson: Hi, I'm Olivia Boisson. I'm a corps de ballet member with the New York City Ballet. Every dancer is trying to make their pointe shoe a part of them, so they wanna mold it to their foot as much as possible. So there's a lot involved to make that happen. It's really important, because we have them on from 10:00 a.m., to 11:00 p.m., so you wanna make sure that there's nothing bothering you. So you fix them and fix them until they're right. If I'm performing and rehearsing a lot, it could be up to three pairs a day. They aren't very strong when you're working with them all day. So, they typically do die pretty fast. Regular ballet flats are just, very soft. They're usually canvas, or leather. You can't go up en pointe with them. Pointe shoes are normally a bit harder so that you can get up on your toes. And men typically wear the ballet flats, and women normally wear them to warm up, but not always. Pointe shoes are around $80 to $90 a pair. At least that's how much they were when I was growing up. But the company gives all the pointe shoes for free, so we have as many as we need. Every dancer sews their pointe shoes differently. All to support your ankle in different ways. I put mine a little bit further forward, probably like an inch away from this seam. I'm just gonna smush the box. The box is where your toes go, and it's typically pretty tough, and pretty hard when you get a new shoe, and so you want it to be a little bit more malleable so that you can move your toes inside the box. So, I'm gonna smush them. I need to be able to move that part, so I'm gonna stick my heel in the middle, and pop it like that, so that, now I can bend this part of the shoe. This is called the shank. It's kind of like, your arch support. But you want it to bend, so that you can point your foot. So now they bend in here and they bend here, so it's a little easier for me to get my foot in there. Now I'm gonna bang them, because they're still pretty loud. And when you're dancing, it's very distracting. Alright. I usually will put a little Second Skin. They're like little gel squares. So, I usually put them at the tips of my big toes, 'cause that is where most of the pressure is when I'm en pointe, and then I tape them so that they stay on. And then I'm gonna put an elastic here, and then I'm gonna put my paper towels on. I just wanna get a good bend in my shoe, which is why I'm like, pushing them out like this. They feel pretty good. Alright, so now the bottom of the shoe is all, not as smooth, so it's harder to like, slip. So, this is rosin. You can like, smash it and it becomes powder and you kind of, just wipe your foot. Like, the edges that are slippery, and it's a lot less, slippery. Sometimes the very tip here will get very soft. So then I will use this hot glue to harden it back up again. That way you don't have to like, sew a whole new shoe. You can sort of make this last a little bit longer. Some dancers will put it on the outside. Sometimes they do that, to give it a little bit more support at the top, so that it's not so soft when you get up. With a new pair, it just really keeps you all the way up. With a dead pair, it'd get really soft in here. Everything would just be much more soft. So it's harder to dance hours and hours when the shoe isn't keeping you up. You have to do a lot more work.

How Michael B. Jordan's "Black Panther" Makeup Was Done — Exclusive Behind The Scenes

03:10
To play Killmonger in "Black Panther," Michael B. Jordan had to be covered in 3,000 prosthetic dots. Makeup artist Joel Harlow created Killmonger's hashmarks for the movie. The FX artist designed each in a mold, which was made from a glue-like material to stick to Jordan's skin. Correction: The photo of an actor being given a prosthetic lip plate at 1:54 in our video is incorrectly identified. It is not Isaach De Bankolé, but rather a different actor playing a tribal elder. Edgar Askelovic is a German-based artist who makes hyperrealistic sculptures of celebrities. One of his notable works is a Basquiat-themed sculpture for Rihanna's 30th birthday. How Actors Learn Different Accents For Movies

03:58
Ever since his breakout role in 2010's "Never Let Me Go," Domhnall Gleeson has become one of the most sought-after actors in the movie industry. His roles vary from supporting efforts in blockbuster franchises like "Star Wars" and "Harry Potter," to lead performances in dramas like "Ex Machina" and "Brooklyn," as well as family fare like "Peter Rabbit." We asked Gleeson to reveal how he learns different accents for his roles. He says his most recent work in "The Little Stranger" was his most difficult assignment to-date. "The Little Stranger" opens in theaters on August 31. ----------------------------------------------------- INSIDER is great journalism about what passionate people actually want to know. Moon: I always try to help out the law. Jim Farrell: We don't really know anything of the rest of the world. Thomas McGregor: It was my fault, I take full responsibility. Caleb: So, let's have a conversation. Ava: What would you like to know? Domhnall Gleeson: If it's the right filmmaker, I'm willing to do anything. I'll do two lines, or I'll do the lead, or I'll do something which isn't flattering. Good filmmakers are the reason that I'm an actor at all. It's because I love good films. So I think I'm also just willing to throw myself into whatever they need me to be for their movie. Faraday: Caroline, you mustn't let this business get inside you. Gleeson: The film is a kind of a gothic ghost story. My character grew up very poor. Always looked up to the upper classes, wanted to be from the upper classes. It was a very long process actually getting the accent. I worked with a great dialect coach, we kind of invented a new accent for him because he was from the working class and yet he aspires to be from a higher class, and yet he can't lose the accent completely. So we kind of invented that. We also listened to Philip Larkin reading his own poems. Philip Larkin: I work all day and get half drunk at night. Gleeson: He grew up not wealthy and yet when he read his poems, the accent he had was very posh and then something weird happens when you realize that somebody has changed themselves in some way through their accent. General Hux: Who do you think you're talking to? All remaining systems will bow to the First Order! Gleeson: Hux is full on fascist, English upper class, rolls his R's sometime and it's very aspirational and strong. Gleeson: I thought I had done a really good job at my accent on "Harry Potter," until I turned up on set and went Australian. Bill Weasley: True enough, owe it all to a werewolf, name of Greyback. Gleeson: And I couldn't stop being Australian for a whole day, my first day in front of everybody. So that was the worst thing in the world. What you wanna do is forget about it when you're doing it and just be able to be the character. Oldest Son: It's not my fault, it's not my fault. They never really loved me. They always loved him more. They were leaving me behind. Moon: I don't know those boys. I always try to help out the law. Gleeson: It's funny, southern American is definitely easier than a more general American or something from either coast. The southern thing, I don't know I think because of the way that the sentences work and the up and down of the tonality of it, you can hear it and you can grab on to it. It's an accent you can grab onto. South African or Welsh, like they're the nightmare ones, they're the ones that you just like wake up sweating about having to do someday. I mean, I didn't go to drama school or anything like that so it's my own little system which has developed, but yeah, a lot of exercises in the mornings then I tend to keep the accent up during the day, just so it settles into my mouth and I'm not doing an accent when we start doing a scene. Oftentimes I'll find a poem that I think suits the character and that will be my mantra that I go to because it puts you in a good state of mind and it gets your mouth in shape for what you're about to do. Gleeson: I'll keep it up on set, but then when they say, "cut" on the last take of the day, I go back to Irish and then I can go home and talk to my friends and not have them hate me. You know? So I can try and be myself again.

How Prosthetics Are Made For Movies

03:23
As seen with the Oscar-winning film "The Darkest Hour", makeup and prosthetics enable actors to fully look the part of the role they're playing. Makeup casters use a process called lifecasting. They'll cover the actor in "goop" to create an exact replica, with which they use to build prosthetics to wear. A lot of movies rely on CGI to bring movies to life, but when it can be done, prosthetics truly do enhance the realism of a film. The INSIDER team believes that life is an adventure! Why Is Saffron So Expensive?

04:55
Harvesting saffron requires a lot of physical labor to get the flowers from the field to final packaging. The harvesting process plus its distinct flavor, smell, and color make it the most expensive spice in the world. It's used in kitchens across the world, as a fabric and skin dye, and may soon be used more widely for medicinal purposes. How Wes Anderson Makes His Animated Movies

03:39
Director Wes Anderson is known for his stop-motion movies, like "Fantastic Mr. Fox". His newest film "Isle of Dogs" is out in theaters now — and it was no easy task to bring over 1,000 puppets to life. Puppets vastly ranged in sizes — some were the size of a fingernail while others could be climbed into — but above all else, they had to be individually manipulated to animate them for the big screen. Kim Kardashian's Trainer Reveals Her Dieting And Workout Secrets

04:01
Kim Kardashian credits her personal trainer Melissa Alcantara for transforming her body over the past year. INSIDER spoke to Alcantara on how to lose weight and gain muscle through workouts and nutrition to get a body like Kim Kardashian. See more from Melissa Alcantara: https://fitgurlmel.com/ The INSIDER team believes that life is an adventure! Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: https://thisisinsider.com INSIDER on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thisisinsider/ INSIDER on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thisisinsider/ INSIDER on Twitter: https://twitter.com/thisisinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is a transcript of the video: Melissa Alcantara: What we've been working on for the past almost year is just kind of the training method that I do. And it's the same training method that I use for Kim. It's mostly about eating. I mean, people think it's in the exercise, but if you're not eating right consistently, then it's just never going to happen. You know, her diet has come a long way and has changed a lot in terms of just eliminating processed foods and just getting her to eat real food. So if it comes in a box, if it didn't grow off a tree or the earth didn't give it to you, then just stay away from it. Fresh foods, unprocessed foods, and only water. As for the workouts, I would do something that's mixed, so that there's weight training, there's high-intensity interval training and there's steady state cardio. For now, you know I train Kim consistently. Sometimes I train her sisters Khloe and Kourtney. Kim Kardashian: She's even Snapchatting on my workout with Melissa. I give her the privilege of working out with her one time. Alcantara: I honestly, I just love her. She's also like one of the best clients that you could ever have. She doesn't cancel. She's always there. Kardashian: This is what I'm doing today. Alcantara: A lot of our sessions are at 6 a.m. I wake up at 4. So we train about five, six days a week. It ranges from an hour to an hour and a half. We do a lot of squats, deadlifts, chest press, overhead press, a ton, a ton of sprints. We do pull-ups, dips, but I would say that 85% of our training is weight training. You have to put the work in. You have to be intense, you have to struggle with every rep and feel it. It doesn't mean that you're gonna be Arnold and get huge. Kardashian: You guys, she's trying to kill me. Alcantara: Only a little bit. Kardashian: Officially trying to kill me. Alcantara: In the beginning, you know, I was sitting on my couch. I had gained 70 pounds with my daughter and I saw this infomercial for Insanity, which is a home workout program. And I saw these people's transformations. And I packed up all my food, I never cheated, only drank water, never missed a workout and 60 days later, I was 40 pounds lighter. I decided I wanted to do a bodybuilding competition in December of 2015. I won first place in Miss Figure and Miss Physique and that's when Kim contacted me. So she saw my transformation picture on Instagram. She was like scrolling through Instagram at 4 o'clock in the morning and she was like, "Wow, this woman, she's a Mom. She lives a regular life. Look at how she changed her life." She was looking for something that was sustainable. She didn't want to just lose weight fast and then you know, gain it again. It's a lifestyle. I had no expectations of becoming a celebrity trainer. I'm not thinking, "Oh yeah, I'm going to train Oprah tomorrow." I just hope that they get the results they're looking for. And every time she sees a new muscle growing or new lines, new definition — Kardashian: Do you guys see my muscles? Alcantara: The look on her face just makes me like super excited for her, because I know exactly what that feels like. Kardashian: Hamstrings, my favorite. Alcantara: Yeah, except that you're doing it with that bar. Kardashian: Oh, she has the light bar. This is what I'm doing. Alcantara: Exactly.

Why Tattoos Last Forever

03:09
Tattoos have developed a varied form of expression across the world, but the science behind their everlasting-presence is even more fascinating. Ink flows down the needles when they pierce the epidermis. Once the ink is inside the skin, the body's immune system can't ingest it, leaving the tattoo to stay. How Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left To Cry" Music Video Was Made

03:05
In Ariana Grande's new music video "No Tears Left To Cry," the singer appears to be able to walk on walls. The director created the illusion with a popular Hollywood technique — actually spinning the room. The video camera moves with the room as it spins, so it appears that the room is actually standing still while Grande moves around. The technique takes a lot of practice, but the end result is impressive.
