Ryanair Runs on Couchbase Mobile

01:58
This is a comparison of Ryanair’s mobile app before Couchbase Mobile and with Couchbase Mobile. On the left, you’ll see the original application. This architecture was a hybrid mobile app using REST services backed by a relational database and cache. In this architecture, the mobile device talks to the Web Server, via REST, which retrieves data from the cache and/or database. The cache and database are separate systems. With this architecture: • Bookings took more than five minutes to complete • Data had to be retrieved from the server during each booking request, increasing the amount of time to complete a booking • Over 80 GB of data was being transferred to mobile apps per day to drive the booking process On the right is the app running on Couchbase Mobile. With Couchbase Mobile, Ryanair moved to a synchronization architecture. Semi-Static Data is stored in the embedded Couchbase Lite database locally on the device and automatically updated via Sync Gateway when it changes in the cloud. The app always retrieves the data from the embedded database, eliminating the need to constantly request this data from the server. With Couchbase Mobile, Ryanair: • Can easily manage Semi-Static Data • Did not have to implement their own synchronization and storage solution • Was able to integrate with existing Android and iOS apps without significant re-architecture The mobile app experience is now faster and better. You’ll see on the train below how quickly the app running on Couchbase Mobile hits landmarks like finding flights, seat selection, and more. Additionally: • The booking process is 60%+ faster (slashed from over 5 minutes to under 2) • Network traffic to drive bookings is 87% more efficient (reduced from 80 GB/day to 10 GB/day) • The user experience is vastly improved, as evidenced by an increase in app store ratings

MoneGraph: Building a Blockchain-based Digital Art Market – Couchbase Connect 2014

38:43
The success of Bitcoin shows that financial transactions can be conducted in a decentralized way. Whether you believe in Bitcoin as a currency or not, there is no denying that Bitcoin’s underlying storage model and consensus-based protocol, the blockchain, validated a new data architecture for building networked applications. In a world of Big Data and the Cloud, the Bitcoin blockchain, the largest of its kind, is still relatively small at around 25 GB. As developers start to imagine new applications beyond money-like infocurrency, they find that they want to store additional metadata or even rich content in the blockchain. In this talk, Chris Tse, an architect and designer of digital ecosystems, will present a hierarchical data storage model that divides a decentralized application storage needs into three tiers, to be stored in the blockchain (GBs), a NoSQL document store (TBs), and BLOB store (PBs), respectively. Using cryptographic techniques along with Smart Contracts, Chris will show how developers can maintain the trustless model advocated by the Bitcoin enthusiasts, while tapping into the proven scalability of distributed database clusters like Couchbase and P2P file transfer protocols like BitTorrent. Chris will present an example of how Monegraph, a digital artwork registry and marketplace spearheaded by NYU art professor Kevin McCoy, is moving to this tiered architecture using a combination of the Ethereum blockchain, Couchbase document store, and Amazon S3 / BitTorrent to build vibrant market for buying, selling, and licensing digital art. This talk was originally presented at Couchbase Connect on October 6, 2014 at Westin St. Francis Grand Ballroom in San Francisco. Opening Keynote: Couchbase Containers with Bare Metal Performance – Couchbase Connect 2015

31:33
Containerization, spurred on by Docker’s rise, is swiftly establishing itself as the future of computing. Containers promise a shorter, faster path from development to deploy, and may also improve performance and cost efficiencies. Yet, achieving the promised efficiencies and convenience, especially with applications that require sophisticated networking, remains challenging. Worse, many operators compromise container performance by running them with an unnecessary hardware hypervisor layer that slows performance and increases costs. In this session, Joyent CTO Bryan Cantrill will demonstrate how we can enjoy the simplicity and performance or running Couchbase on bare metal while also achieving the benefits promised by containerization. Joyent’s Triton container-native platform gives applications like Couchbase full access to the network stack and fast I/O that you’d expect of bare metal, combined with the convenience of a Docker-native API to launch those containers across the entire data center. See Bryan deploy, rebalance, and benchmark a high performance Couchbase cluster spread across the data center with just a few Docker commands. Agility with Data Modeling at DIRECTV Using N1QL in Couchbase with Node.js – Couchbase Connect 2015

41:57
Today’s companies are challenged to change rapidly and while maintaining high quality standards. Managing Entity–relationship models has become a constraint to these objectives. Now, NoSQL solutions and dynamic languages are offering a simplified approach to modeling real world objects. In particular, JavaScript offers an end-to-end solution – from the user’s web browser to the JSON object stored in the database. By integrating Couchbase into the picture, the performance and flexibility offered by projects with these technologies will become the next big thing: fast paced development, agile changes, high performance, easily scalable, and feature rich. This presentation is about the benefits and challenges of an architecture based on: Node.js, Couchbase and N1QL. Couchbase Server Scalability and Performance at LinkedIn: Couchbase Connect 2015

23:42
Jerry talks about lessons learned taking the second-highest QPS Couchbase Server at LinkedIn from meltdown to awesome. The story of Couchbase at LinkedIn is an insightful and suspense-filled story of making slow progress in tuning a system for performance. Jerry's team runs one of the fastest (by QPS or latency standards) Couchbase clusters within LinkedIn by making clever use of SSD's and by tuning the parameters correctly. Achieving this kind of standard in tuning is done primarily by avoiding the use of buckets, and tuning the right number of reader-vs-writer threads. Reactive Data Access with RxJava, Including N1QL – Couchbase Connect 2015

This talk shows how to build scalable, reactive, and fault tolerant applications by making use of RxJava and the brand new fully reactive Couchbase Java SDK 2.x. We will also cover stability patterns and how our brand new query language, “N1QL” fits into the picture. This subject is important, as applications that exclusively rely on synchronous data access often hit a scalability wall when responses slow down and thread pools are exhausted. New paradigms, like reactive programming, alleviate the wasting of resources by dispatching them where they can do useful work and provide extensive toolsets to deal with the ever growing demands of web applications.
