http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/59499017/video/houzz-tv-showing-her-creative-side-in-a-classic-los-angeles-a-frame Los Angeles ceramics artist and interior designer Desanka Fasiska’s 1963 A-frame kit house seemed to have more working against it than for it. The slanted walls made furniture arrangement awkward and didn’t offer much insulation or a place to run electricity and pipes. But Fasiska pushed forward, embracing the strangeness and creating an open-plan home with enough spunk to live up to the stunning exposed architecture.

You Won’t Believe Everything This Tiny Loft Can Do

http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/62333729/video/houzz-tv-you-wont-believe-everything-this-tiny-loft-can-do Donnie and Nicole Chiu-Wang loved the location of their San Francisco studio, but they desperately needed to make its 537 square feet feel more spacious. To do that, they turned their attention to the 13-foot ceiling. Having watched online videos of cleverly designed moving walls in small New York City apartments, they thought that there must be a way to use their space more efficiently too. Donnie reached out to an architect friend, who offered to take on the dilemma with another friend. The pair came up with a prefabricated multipurpose loft that freed up square footage, and includes two beds, a stand-up desk, a dining table and plenty of storage.

A lot has changed since she and her husband, Kyle, both architects, bought and began remodeling the house nine years ago. After strategically upgrading systems and reconfiguring the first floor of the home in the first six years — doing most of the labor themselves — the couple began designing another round of changes after starting both a family and their architecture firm, Studio Zerbey Architects.

Man Restores Pilgrim Home from 1665 to its Original Glory

06:49
http://www.houzz.com/houzztv Doug Towle considers old homes his children. The lifelong bachelor has spent much of his adult life restoring antique buildings, including one of his most recent: a 1665 Pilgrim house that had been in the same Billerica, Massachusetts, family for 12 generations. The house had to be moved, so Towle carefully documented and disassembled the structure, then spent the next three and a half years restoring it. He dug up some 35,000 bricks that were buried outside of 18th-century homes, knocked on strangers’ doors in search of vintage glass and straightened 100 salvaged handmade rosette nails every night before bed. “I don’t have any children and grandchildren,” says Towle, who’s vice president of marketing at Globe Firefighter Suits. “It’s a legacy thing.” http://www.houzz.com/houzztv

A Most Unusual Indoor-Outdoor Los Angeles Connection

06:36
http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/28942738/video/houzz-tv-a-most-unusual-indoor-outdoor-connection The location was perfect. Nestled in the woods of Los Angeles, surrounded at night by deer and coyotes, with no neighbors to speak of, this 1950s Hollywood Hills abode was the perfect California hideaway. A five-minute drive put you on Hollywood Boulevard. The western red cedar exterior looked like a cabin, but the midcentury layout felt fresh. Jack Latner had found the perfect house before he even stepped inside. In 2009, after a year of searching, Latner bought the 1950s Val Powelson home from its third owner. He was easily sold on the property; an 800-square-foot master bedroom addition that enclosed a decades-old California sycamore tree only sweetened the deal. “I thought it was one of the coolest things I’d ever seen,” he says.

She had always lived in apartments with her mother, Francine Pisani, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia soon after Cindy was born. “I really can’t imagine what that must have been like for her,” Cindy says. “She worked really hard for not very much, but we always had what we needed. We didn’t have a lot, and consequently we never had a house.” But Cindy kept dreaming. Years later, Cindy and her husband, David, realized part of her dream when they built a custom home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They also created an attached one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit for her mom so they could all live together.
